Our Committee

  • Thalia Seale – President

Hi! As president it's my responsibility to keep the lights on at OUFC and try to prevent unmitigated disaster. You can come to me if you have any queries or requests!

I have been fencing sabre (and notably foil once and we still won despite my best efforts haha) for the Women's Blues at Oxford for the last two years and have hugely enjoyed my experiences on the team and the friends I have made through the club. I started fencing as a novice in my first year of undergrad at Durham.

I do my best to support the president in the running of the club and organise Stash!

I've been fencing with OUFC on the blue's team since 1st year and had various roles within the committee in the 5 years I've been here. Wow that makes me feel old to type. Please get in touch if I can help with anything but forgive me if I take a little time to reply, medicine gets busier each year! When I'm not at the hospital I spend a fair bit of time painting or in the gym!

  • Will Osborne – Treasurer

    Degree: MMath Mathematics
    College: Hertford
    Weapon: Epee
    Contact

Hey! I manage the club's finances and generally try to keep us from going bankrupt. If you have any payment-related questions, please let me know!

I've been fencing epee for a few years, and after first captaining the Men's Seconds team I joined the Blues team last year. I'm having a lot of fun fencing! Looking forward to seeing you on the piste :)

(Also, Maddy, we can definitely sort out the doughnuts...)

  • Laura Pöysti – Women's Captain

    Degree: MEng Materials Science
    College: Corpus Christi
    Weapon: Epee
    Contact

I'm Laura, your women's captain for 23/24! My job is captaining our women*'s side, selecting Blues & 2nds teams, organizing matches, and generally being there for our competitive women*'s fencers. I've been at OUFC on the Women's Blues for 2 years and been fencing for 10 years (nationally and internationally) back home.

    Hobbies: rowing (boo i know)

Fun fact: lost half my team in a Polish bar at Worlds once

Degree: no, after 3 years, I still don't know what materials science is either

  • Carl Hentges – Men's Captain

    “You like OUFC?

Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste, but when Carl came out in '23, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole parry riposte has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the team a big boost. He's been compared to Ari Warrington, but I think Carl has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

OUFC released this, Preseason, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Be there or be square ", a meme so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the meaning. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the OUFC itself.” - Samuel Pugh

  • Martha Carus Bird – Social Secretary

    Degree: BA History
    College: Lady Margaret Hall
    Weapon: Foil
    Contact

Hi - I'm Martha and I'm one of the Social Secs for this year. I'm in my second year at LMH studying History. We're really looking forward to cultivating an interesting social calendar for everyone (particularly planning crew dates). We want to ensure OUFC is a fun social space, but more importantly a safe and inclusive one too. I've been fencing for 11 years now, and am enjoying the pipeline into BUCS specialism.

  • Rohan Tandon – Social Secretary

    Degree: BA Medicine
    College: Balliol
    Weapon: Epee
    Contact

Hi, I’m Rohan and one of the social secs this year, better known as the life force of OUFC! When not fencing epée, I enjoy watching and playing tennis, cricket and football, and singing (loudly and mediocrely).

  • Elliott Loukin - Beginners' Secretary

    Degree: BA Medicine
    College: St Anne’s
    Weapon: Foil/Sabre
    Contact

Hey, my name is Elliott and I will be the beginner/intermediate rep for OUFC this year. I’ll be looking after the beginner and intermediate fencers and making sure they get the best introduction/continuation to fencing possible. I started fencing with OUFC a year ago as a novice and I’ve found it to be a great experience- one I hope to replicate for this year’s beginners! Though I began my fencing ‘career’ in foil, recently I have done some sabre and I am looking forward to continuing in sabre in the year ahead.

  • Madeleine Fung – Welfare Officer

    College: Jesus
    Weapon: Sabre

Hi! As Welfare Officer, I'm in charge of making sure everyone is healthy and happy. This includes begging our treasurer for money to feed you doughnuts. I also used to fence sabre for the Singapore team, and now the Women's Blues, which means I spend an embarassing amount of time dawdling during training- so come say hi! And very very occasionally you can find me studying weather satellites in the Geography department.

I joined the club in 2021 and absolutely loved it from day 1. I have fenced épée before, but picked up sabre from scratch at the club! My role as HandS is to make sure everything is doing safe and well, can deal with some minor injuries at training as well.

  • Tianxing Cao - Sponsorship and Outreach Officer

Degree: MPhil Global and Area Studies
    College: St. Anthony’s
    Weapon: Epee
    Contact

Hi! I started fencing in Beijing many years ago, competed nationally with DCFC in the US, and previously captained the epee team at UC Berkeley's fencing club. This is my second year at Oxford and this amazing club, and I decided to get more involved with the club's committee. I will be in charge of external outreach, as well as developing and maintaining relations with the club's sponsors and partners. When I'm not on the piste, you can find me doing all sorts of other (clearly lesser) sports and stressing out about my thesis.
